Attorney Bernard Gaffney is skilled as a litigator, trial attorney and corporate/transactional attorney, who handles all types of litigation while also assisting several small and medium to large size businesses as their Outside General Counsel.
In his Outside General Counsel role, Bernard partners with his corporate clients to understand their businesses and provide advice and counsel on wide ranging legal issues including incorporating, contracts, business strategy, employment, IP and trade secrets, financing, regulatory, insurance, legal risks, and compliance issues. Bernard draws upon skills and experience gained while serving for several years as an In-House Counsel to Fortune 500 companies, as well as more than 20 years advising businesses ranging in size from 2 to 3 employees to over 100 employees. In his General Counsel role, Corporate clients have relied on Attorney Gaffney to negotiate and successfully conclude complex legal and international contracts with a total value in excess of $1,000,000,000. He has overseen highly sensitive investigations for corporate clients in the US and abroad. Attorney Gaffney’s business clients often come to consider him as not just a trusted advisor but a business partner, helping to navigate difficult issues, avoid costly mistakes and to consider fresh perspectives on both legal and commercial issues.
As a litigator, Attorney Gaffney has significant experience in all aspects of civil litigation, from the investigation and claim stage through to trial and appeal. He has handled numerous high exposure cases and claims, and obtained favorable verdicts in diverse areas including medical malpractice, hospital negligence, defective premises, products liability and will contests. In addition, Attorney Gaffney has defended clients in administrative, disciplinary and licensure hearings before State of Connecticut’s various commissions and departments. Attorney Gaffney has argued appeals before the Connecticut Appellate courts as well as before the United States 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in New York.
Prior to joining Brown Paindiris, Bernard spent several years handling litigation and corporate matters in Connecticut and throughout the United States, while helping to run the Hartford office of one of the largest law firms in the US. He accepted a partnership position at Brown Paindiris to renew his focus on his corporate clients and to focus exclusively on litigation and business matters in Connecticut and Massachusetts.
