During the Holiday Season, Car Accidents Are Even More Prevalent on Connecticut Roadways

Car accidents are a frequent occurrence in Connecticut and throughout the country. During the holiday season, car accidents are even more prevalent on Connecticut roadways. A number of these recent accidents that occurred involved injuries and one involved death.

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, authorities increased the amount of enforcement to target reckless drivers and those driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Police wrote nearly 900 tickets for speeding, and almost 300 tickets for not wearing seat belts. Another 2,600 motorists were cited for a number of moving violations, including the use of cell phones while driving and tailgating.

Over the same weekend, police were at the scene of 665 car accidents and made arrests involving 25 individuals. Out of those accidents, 88 involved someone who was injured and one resulted in a fatality. Police say that the fatal accident is still being investigated.

The specific details surrounding the Thanksgiving car accidents were not reported. The injured victims may have recourse to pursue legal actions against the parties deemed responsible. Depending on the outcome of the investigation into the fatal accident, the family of the deceased may have the right to file a wrongful death claim if another party is blamed for causing the crash. The civil court system in Connecticut typically adjudicates these types of cases based upon evidence of negligence that is found to have caused or materially contributed to the accident and any injuries or death that resulted. If negligence is proved to the court, then monetary damages may be awarded based upon specified claims for financial loss.
