Connecticut Jury Has Now Convicted an Ex-milford Police Officer

November 9, 2012 General

A car accident is typically an unnerving event, but it can be even more so if someone dies as a result. Fatal car accidents often result in criminal charges being filed that can take months to defend against and may lead to long-term consequences such as jail time and a criminal record. The consequences can be even more severe if a police officer causes the accident, because that officer is sworn to uphold the law and protect the citizens.

A Connecticut jury has now convicted an ex-Milford police officer, who was charged with reckless driving and second-degree manslaughter related to a car accident he was involved in on June 13, 2009. The accident resulted in the deaths of two 19-year-old teenagers.

According to court testimony and documents, the ex-officer was leaving a call in West Haven and traveling 90 mph on Boston Post Road in Orange. He was not answering another call and he did not have his lights or sirens on. He allegedly sped through a flashing yellow light before crashing into the victims’ car at 77 mph.

It would seem that the officer would be required to be aware of what is happening on the road, especially when traveling at high speeds.

The ex-officer was terminated from his position on the force because of the accident. He is also being sued for compensation and damages by one of the victim’s families in a separate court case, which is a family’s right when it loses a loved one.
