The Center will provide comprehensive alternative dispute resolution services throughout Connecticut, with convenient locations at all of our BPS offices in Glastonbury, Hartford, East Hampton, Simsbury, New Hartford, and Essex.

The Mediation Center will be led by three distinguished retired Connecticut judges, each bringing decades of judicial experience and proven expertise in dispute resolution. Our firm has been serving clients in Connecticut since 1977 and has received distinctions such as being named to U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Law Firms” list in 2023. The BPS Mediation Center is our newest avenue of providing award-winning representation to our clients.

Our Distinguished Judges

The Honorable Peter T. Zarella (Ret.) served over sixteen years as an Associate Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court until his retirement from the bench in 2016, where he authored more than 300 majority opinions and over 100 dissents and concurrences on landmark cases including Kelo v. New London. Prior to his Supreme Court appointment, Justice Zarella served on the Connecticut Superior Court and Appellate Court. A Life Fellow of the Connecticut Bar Foundation and recipient of the Connecticut Law Tribune’s Lifetime Achievement Award, he brings extensive experience in complex civil litigation, appellate matters, and constitutional law to the mediation practice.

The Honorable C. Ian McLachlan (Ret.) brings a distinguished career that spans military service as a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve member to serving on every division of the Connecticut Superior Court following his appointment to the bench in 1996, including presiding over the Complex Civil Litigation Docket. Elevated to the Appellate Court in 2003 and the Connecticut Supreme Court in 2009, Justice McLachlan served until his retirement from the bench in 2012 and has been inducted into the Connecticut Chapter of the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals, a peer-vetted honor reserved for the state’s most respected mediators and arbitrators. His leadership roles have included the Connecticut Bar Association, American Bar Association, and numerous judicial commissions.

The Honorable A. Susan Peck (Ret.) served twenty-six years on the Connecticut Superior Court until her retirement from the bench in 2022, primarily presiding in jury and court trials in the Civil Division, including the Civil Complex Litigation Docket. Before her judicial appointment, Judge Peck spent eighteen years in private practice specializing in employment, commercial, victim’s rights, and civil rights litigation. A Sustaining Life Fellow of the Connecticut Bar Foundation and founder of its History of Connecticut Women in the Legal Profession Project, she continues to serve the legal community as chair of the upcoming Symposium on the Status of Connecticut Women in the Law.
