Domestic violence (also known as family violence) matters are treated seriously and urgently in Connecticut. While many people think “domestic violence” is limited to assault, these matters actually cover a wide variety of offenses, including but not limited to:

- Breach of Peace – C.G.S. § 53a-181

- Unlawful restraint – C.G.S. § 53a-96

Domestic violence offenses generally occur between family members, members of the same household, or dating partners. This may include:
- Spouses or former spouses
- Parents or their children
- Persons related by blood or marriage
- Persons who are currently in or have recently been in a dating relationship
- Persons who have a child in common, regardless of whether they have been married or lived together
- Persons who presently reside together or have previously resided together, such as roommates or housemates
