Riding Solo: Sologamy, The Newest New Age Trend
In 2017, we’ve heard of people being married to their smartphone and career. However, none of these “marriages” have been as perplexing as sologamy, or, “self-marriage”, a new-age practice that’s garnering attention world-wide.
Sologamy has been in the public eye since the early 2000’s, after a 2003 episode of “Sex and the City”, where Carrie Bradshaw marries herself after a crisis at a friend’s baby shower, and after a 2009 episode of “Glee”, where Jane Lynch’s character Sue Sylvester marries herself in a tracksuit in the school gymnasium. The practice has since regained popularity in 2013, after an Indiegogo fundraising campaign started by Jeffrey Levin and Bonnie Powers went viral online. The duo created the “I Married Me Self-Wedding In-A-Box” kit, consisting of a ring, pre-written vows, and ceremony instructions.
At Brown, Paindiris, & Scott, we are very happy that sologamy is indeed a legally non-binding commitment, and instead, a unique ceremonial practice reminding one of self-love. There are companies that now specialize in single wedding photos and solo wedding parties. With all of this growing popularity, who’s to say it won’t be legal to marry yourself sometime in the future? Let’s hope law schools properly prepare future attorneys if this type of ceremony continues to grow and popularize. I mean, how could one of our attorneys even figure out how to properly award alimony and divide property after one files for a “sologamy-divorce” citing irreconcilable differences? Now that sounds like a difficult case!
