Attorney Merchant is licensed to practice law in Connecticut at the state and federal district court levels and the Supreme Court of the United States. She is a member of the Connecticut Bar Association, and the Estates & Probate, Elder Law, Professional Discipline, Veteran Affairs, and Tax sections. In addition, she is a current member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.
Prior to joining the firm, Attorney April Merchant worked in private practice with a primary focus in the areas of trust and estate planning and probate administration. Attorney Merchant brings a wealth of experience and expertise from the inception of her career as a paralegal through her years of advocating on behalf of her clients through direct representation and through community and organizational involvement.
During her career as a paralegal, she worked in a variety of practice areas, including estate planning, probate, family and real estate. She was also active in her legal community, serving multiple terms on the board of directors for the Paralegal Association of New Hampshire, assisting in the creation of the Collaborative Law Alliance of New Hampshire, and working on the first collaborative divorce in New Hampshire. Outside of work, Attorney Merchant served as Vice President and Treasurer of the Woman’s Club of Concord, New Hampshire, which assists homeless women and victims of domestic violence.
In 2001, Attorney Merchant graduated second in her class with her associate’s degree in paralegal studies from The New Hampshire Technical Institute. During her time at the New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI), she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. Following graduation, she joined the American Bar Association Advisory Committee and assisted in getting NHTI certified as the first ABA approved paralegal program in the State of New Hampshire, and furthered the creation, implementation, and ABA accreditation of the Nurse Paralegal program at NHTI. She continued to serve on the advisory board for sixteen years.
In 2014 she graduated with honors from Southern New Hampshire University with a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance, with a minor in international business. Immediately thereafter and while working as a law clerk, Attorney Merchant attended the evening juris doctor program at Suffolk University Law School. Upon completion of her law degree in 2018, she was asked to join The New Hampshire Technical Institute as an adjunct professor, where she taught real estate law to paralegal degree, paralegal certificate and nurse paralegal students.
In 2019, Attorney Merchant moved to Connecticut where she practiced in the areas of trust and estate planning, elder law and probate and trust administration. Throughout her years of practice, she was drawn to the trust and estate field, pursuing a career in that area for the last 20 years.
