Attorney Bruce Newman’s Client becomes Safety Activist after Winning Jury Verdict against Pfizer
After taking on Pfizer in a contentious whistleblower lawsuit, Attorney Newman’s client, Ms. Becky McClain, has become a national spokesman for biotech safety. Ms. McClain, a former Pfizer employee, was fired after she made safety complaints saying that she was exposed to a virus at a Pfizer laboratory in Groton which made her sick. Since being fired from Pfizer, Ms. McClain, a molecular biologist, has brought much attention to the regulation of synthetic biology. She is a board member of the Alliance for Humane Biotechnology as well as executive director of the Injured Workers National Network. Ms. McClain, who refers to herself as a “reluctant activist,” now speaks all over the country advocating for increased regulation of biotech laboratories.
Ms. McClain was represented by Attorney Bruce Newman, now Of Counsel at Brown Paindiris & Scott, LLP, and Attorney Steve Fitzgerald of New Haven in her case against Pfizer. She stated that Attorneys Newman and Fitzgerald were among the few who agreed to take her case against the giant pharmaceutical company. Attorneys Newman and Fitzgerald won a jury verdict for Ms. McClain in the amount of $1.37 million. Last June, Judge Warren Eginton of the U.S. District Court awarded an additional $900,000 in attorney’s fees and punitive damages. He stated in his ruling that “Pfizer terminated McClain because she made statements about matters of public concern.” Pfizer has since appealed to the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals, where the case is now pending.
