Drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol pose a dangerous and often times deadly risk to others who share the road with them. Tragically, these types of car accidents occur far too often on our Connecticut roadways, and one recent case appears to be no exception. This fatal accident has claimed the life of an 83-year-old woman.
According to authorities, the collision occurred when a 21-year-old male driver veered across the road into oncoming traffic. He slammed into another vehicle carrying four women in a head-on collision. The crash resulted in one fatality and seriously injured another. Two other occupants sustained injuries, but they were not considered as serious in nature.
Authorities responded to the scene and conducted a preliminary investigation. It is now being alleged that the accident was caused due to the other driver being under the influence of drugs, including Benzodiazepine and Oxycodone. According to officials, he was also using his cell phone at the time of the crash. The man faces charges of DUI and manslaughter and is being held at a jail facility on a $350,000 bond.
Car accidents can leave victims seriously injured and, in the most serious cases, even lead to death. Victims who suffer serious injuries due to an accident are generally faced with an avalanche of medical costs, and are at a high risk of losing wages while they make a full recovery. The victims could be awarded monetary damages through the Connecticut court system, especially if evidence deems that a driver was under the influence and was negligent in causing the injuries or death that resulted in a serious collision.
